Confirm that I OPPOSE THE PROPOSED BYRON COUNCIL EVENTS POLICY AS IT DISCRIMINATES AGAINST MUSIC EVENTS.

Byron Shire Council Events Policy Update 30/5/12

We have collected 10,085 petitions so far!

We presented the petition to the Byron Council for their meeting on May 24th. Council chose to ignore the petition and voted to keep the Byron Events Policy as 4 councillors voted for the policy and 3 against– allowing only two events yearly in Byron Bay that are music, and are amplified and which it is intended to have more than 6,000 persons daily attend.

Whilst Bluesfest remains fine, as we already have an approval until 2021 – we are scratching our heads here, as the North Byron Parklands site – where the Splendour festival will be presented in future – has just received a 3 event Approval from the State government – which means there seems to be a 2 tiered policy in Byron shire – where they get three events, and the Tyagarah Tea Tree farm site gets one event.

We were asked by our councillors and mayor approximately 10 years ago to buy and create THE Events site in our shire – to that end, and in good faith, we have invested millions of dollars, after many meetings with successive mayors and councillors, including those in council today, and have received many statements of support in what we are doing. This is why we do not understand what has recently occurred to cause a number of them to change their vote. We believe we have been deceived and we are presenting the petition to our local state member soon who will have the petition debated on the floor of the state government.

This is definitely not over – and whilst the Byron Council maintains an Events Policy that discriminates against music – we will fight as hard as we can to bring it down. Please continue to sign the petition – and thanks so much for your support
